  • Some crooks are taking gift cards off the rack, scratching off the strip on the back to get the activation code and  then, putting the card back on the rack. Protect yourself by checking the back of the card to make sure it’s not been tampered with.
  • If you’re having a package delivered, beware the front stoop thief.  Crooks are nabbing packages after they are delivered before people get home to retrieve them.  Protect yourself by requiring a signature for a package before it’s dropped off, or if you just won’t be  home, have it sent to the nearest shipping drop station and pick it up there.
  • Beware of counterfeit retail websites that mirror a real company.  Federal authorities have shut down 1500 fake websites in the last year alone.  They are very sophisticated.  The fake and real look almost exactly the same.  Protect yourself  by looking for grammatical and spelling errors on the site– a common tip-off.  Look for the customer service phone number and call it to make your order.  Also, use a credit cared instead of a debit card to make your purchases, because if you get scammed, it’s much easier to contest the charges.
