iPad Mania – To Buy or Not to Buy?

April 1, 2010

The world is all a twitter about the new, just unveiled iPad.

So, once again, what are the cash-strapped, techno geeks to do?  Is it worth plunking down top dollar for another “have-to-have” Apple gadget, or is it time to let this one go, at least for now.  Click here for a few points to consider as you ponder this all important decision.

Watch the video above to learn more about the new iPad’s features, from Tim Gideon of PC Magazine.

To Buy or Not to Buy? – insight from msnbc.com’s Science & Technology page

1.  It’s a first version:

Pro: and first versions of anything can be buggy or inadequate. You don’t want to be Apple’s guinea pig for test marketing. You’ll want a second-generation iPad, sure to be better, cheaper, faster and maybe it will even include other features, including a camera.

Con: and you love to be the first one in your circle of friends to have one, so you can a) let it be known you’re the first one and, b) give them your own assessment of the iPad’s strengths and weaknesses.

2.  Just can’t get past the name:

Can't get past the name

Con: Bla-bla-bla “sanitary napkin” jokes. Bla-bla-bla “tampon” snark. Your friends are going to tease you mercilessly if you buy an iPad. You’re going to be too embarrassed to say, “I have an iPad.” I agree with colleague Helen A.S. Popkin who wrote, “One would think there are absolutely no women working in the upper echelons in Cupertino. And as a quick click on Apple’s executive bios page reveals, one would be right. Still, as technology-entrenched as Apple’s male monopoly may be, at least one guy must know a woman.” To add insult to injury, Hip Handmaids is even offering an “iMax” case with “protective wings” for the iPad.

Pro: You’ve heard all the sophomoric jokes, and they were funny for a day or so (maybe), but you’re over it. The puns and snarkiness will go on, but you’re not 11 years old. Or maybe you are, and you know that sticks and stones may break your bones, but you’ll do better one day when you run Apple’s product-naming division. But in the meantime, you’re getting an iPad for your birthday, and you are stoked.
