More Problems for Toyota: Now It’s Prius Brakes & Lexus Hybrid

February 4, 2010

A problem with the brake system in the 2010 Hybrid Prius is the latest in a series of safety issues causing a crisis for Toyota.  The U.S. Transportation Department opened an investigation into brake problems in the Toyota Prius.  And now Toyota is expanding its own investigation to the Lexus Hybrid as well.  Click Here to see a report from ABC News which has been leading the way in exposing the safety issues with Toyota vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received more than 200 complaints from consumers about brake problems with the Prius.  ABC news Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross reported that Toyota discovered a design flaw in the 2010 Hybrid Prius months ago.  Watch his report above.  The company says the anti-lock brake-system problem, which required a software change to fix, was corrected in all versions of the company’s prized, fuel-efficient car sold since late last month.  Toyota also said it would expand its investigation to all of its hybrid models, including the Lexus HS 250h hybrid.

In a statement, Toyota said, “Some customers have complained of inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction. The system, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage.”

The mechanical parts that make up the brake system in the Lexus model are identical to those in Toyota’s 2010 Prius, but the two gas-electric hybrid cars use different software systems to control the way the brakes are used, said a Toyota spokesman.

The latest problems come just as Toyota is about to begin repairing 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. which have been recalled for gas pedals that can potentially stick, causing the car to accelerate without control.

The continuing safety concerns and Toyota’s delay in notifying the public and left its customers confused and very concerned.  It’s all been a PR nightmare for the once highly regarded company, now dealing with a  tarnished brand.
